This book is a visual description of some of the extraordinary discoveries, entertaining demonstrations and serious experiments carried out by scientists in their pursuit of knowledge about the natural phenomenon of electricity and the harnessing of electric power.

The English scientist Francis Hawksbee invented the first practical electrostatic generator around 1705, but it was nearly two hundred years before the Alternating Current electricity supply system was used to illuminate the ‘City of Light’ with thousands of incandescent lamps at the Chicago World Fair in 1893. Scientists from England, Germany, France, Italy, Denmark and the United States all contributed to the development of this essential element of modern life.

All my books are based on subjects related in some way to science, presenting a visual narrative of historical and contemporary scientific subjects. with images collected and arranged from a wide variety of sources.

Some books are about specific scientists, for example William Herschel a scientist and musician, or the Indian mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan. Others are concerned with a particular aspect of science, for example the Discovery of Electricity looks at the unusual way in which scientists explored the natural phenomena of electricity, Weaving Numbers follows the  development of the computer from the Jacquard loom’,  and the genius of Charles Babbage who recognised its potential for his calculating machine. Arabic Science East to West, a visual narrative of Arabic science in the 8th Century, takes the simplest overview of this complex subject.

Plant Hunters – Explorers & Adventurers, is a botanical adventure, based on a fascination for early explorers who introduced thousands of new plant species to Britain.
