This book is a visual description of some of the extraordinary discoveries, entertaining demonstrations and serious experiments carried out by scientists in their pursuit of knowledge about the natural phenomenon of electricity and the harnessing of electric power.

The English scientist Francis Hawksbee invented the first practical electrostatic generator around 1705, but it was nearly two hundred years before the Alternating Current electricity supply system was used to illuminate the ‘City of Light’ with thousands of incandescent lamps at the Chicago World Fair in 1893. Scientists from England, Germany, France, Italy, Denmark and the United States all contributed to the development of this essential element of modern life.

About

Hand-Bound Artist-Designer Books

me3

As a book designer and maker I put images together collected from many sources to create  pages of digital collage. These are stitched together and hand bound into covers which are screen or digitally printed to make the completed book.

My interests lie in the physical and natural sciences, both historical and contemporary. I am also fascinated by explorers and adventurers who have added to our knowledge of science and related subjects.

My more recent books are about botanical subjects; Plant Hunters was inspired by early explorers who travelled the world in search of new plant species. My current project, not yet complete, is about the trees and plants threatened by climate change and other factors.

all books are made in limited editions (maximum 10) digitally printed, stitched and hand-bound with screen-printed or digitally printed covers.
