Fragile Journeys

Every spring and autumn billions of  birds and insects prepare for epic journeys around the globe, travelling thousands of miles across oceans, deserts and mountains in search of warmer climates and longer daylight hours. Both birds and insects use ancient flyways which have favourable winds, and offer suitable stopover sites which are rich in food, and provide a safe environment for resting during long journeys. Migrating insects help to feed the birds during their journey, and on the way pollinate flowers, control pests and re-cycle nutrients.

Climate change is making a significant difference to migration patterns:warmer springs disrupt the balance of insect food supplies for migrating birds, causing weakness and sometimes starvation. Many millions of birds are also lost to man-made interventions: pesticides, fragmentation of the landscape, brightly lit high rise buildings and sometimes deliberate destruction. all of which could be solved.
